On a vacation near the Gujarat frontier, I went for a morning run with a BSF (Border Security Force) company commander. He was so fast that running with this former commando literally took my breath away!
In fact, every morning, I would see him leading his men for the morning PT (physical training) and he was fitter than his men despite being much older. When I complimented him on his fitness, he told me his story.
He said that about a decade ago he had lost his wife to cancer and had been devastated. So much so that he would struggle to even remember the names of people in his own unit.
But keeping up with the work and fitness routine, he gradually recovered and now he is sharp and fit as ever.
Running, workout, or any physical exercise is an act of rebirth. Everytime you exercise, you become a bit younger, sharper, and stronger.
In the paramilitary forces and the army, fitness is not an option since the day starts with a morning PT. But the rest of us, unfortunately, have a choice. And that choice is our enemy.
We have the choice to be lazy and to procrastinate. We have to choice to not exercise. But when your body says, ‘let us take it easy today’, say ‘permission denied.’
Nobody can force us to pursue fitness – so we have to be our own PT instructor.
Every morning, when you wake up, you can take it easy, but don’t.
Laziness is death by a thousand cuts. Choose life over death. Get out and go for it.
