The cost of addiction

Anna Lembke, a psychiatrist and the author of ‘Dopamine Nation,’ said that the most bizarre addiction she had come across was, shockingly, ‘water addiction.’

One of her patients would drink so much water that it would throw her system out of gear and somehow produce an intoxicating high. Tragically, that patient ultimately took her own life.

When we think of addiction, we don’t realize that it is not just about drugs or substances. If we are obsessively consuming anything (physical or digital) that is hurting us, it is addiction.

Addiction relentlessly strips away our freedom. If we are powerless to resist activities that damage us, how are we free?

There is no price in this world greater than the loss of freedom.
